This day was one of the most important in the Mosaic Holyday system that was in effect in Jerusalem in the first century. This day was a New Moon day and it answered to Rosh ha-Shanah on the Jewish calendar, which is called the Day of Trumpets in the Old Testament (Leviticus 23:23-25). This was the Jewish New Year for commerce and for regulating all government affairs as far as the fiscal years were concerned. It was also the day on which all kings in ancient Judah were crowned (or the years of their reign were counted from this day each year). It was the day when all Israelites advanced one year in age for all legal matters. There could have been no day more appropriate for the birth of the Messiah into the world who was to the rule the world during the period of the Kingdom of God on earth.
