Essentials of New Testament Doctrine

By

Ernest L. Martin, Ph.D.

From the cowardice that shrinks from new truth,
From the laziness that is content with half-truths,
From the arrogance that thinks it knows all truth,
Oh God of Truth, deliver us.

~ Ancient Prayer

This book is dedicated to my best friend,
who happens to be the best colleague
I have ever had the pleasure of being around.
She is as much a part of this book as I am.
She is my darling wife, Ramona Jean.

From God’s Mind to Yours ...

This book explains the New Testament in its simplicity and in its entirety. Understanding The Essentials of New Testament Doctrine will unlock the entire message of the Word of God. As the New Testament is made clear as never before, you will be energized to read the entire Bible as God intended — as a revelation from the mind of God direct to you.

The progressive revelation of God begins with the Law as schoolmaster and peaks with the New Testament message of the central and total role of Christ as Savior and center of history. It is completed in the revelation of the Mystery of God given to the apostles Paul, John, and others.

You will be in awe of your full inheritance and destiny as a child of God — a future shared by all mankind. You will learn Who and What God is. You will learn Jesus Christ’s present position as God’s Firstborn Son and Captain of your salvation. You will learn your present status and future destiny in the family of God in the resurrection.

Dr. ERNEST L. MARTIN wrote The Essentials of New Testament Doctrine to reveal what Christianity is all about. It is a primer that puts into your hands all the fundamental teachings of true Christianity.

David Sielaff, 2004

Foreward

By David Sielaff

Most Christian books do not tell you what the purpose of salvation is, or what God is accomplishing through His work and the work of His Son, Christ Jesus. It is likely that those books do not understand the full scope of what God has in mind for the future. It is vitally important that you know that purpose of God, and what He has done and what He is doing up to this moment by creating you.

The Essentials of New Testament Doctrine is the clearest and best explanation of God’s communication with His children outside of the Bible. If you read and use this book instead of your Bible you are not only missing the point of Dr. Martin’s explanation, you are cheating yourself out of a great gift. God’s Word is His communication, His revelation, His message that literally comes from His mind to your mind through the simple means of printed words in your Bible. The words come to you direct, without filters, without mediators, without symbolism, and without concealment.

This is why The Essentials of New Testament Doctrine was written, to get you to open and read your Bible, and to understand it fully so that the whole purpose of God might stand (Romans 9:8; Ephesians 1:11, 3:11; 1 John 3:8).

Yes, it takes work. Yes, it takes study. Yes, it takes understanding. But this book will assist you. God promises to give you the will to know what He is saying to you, personally and direct, and the result will be a peace that God also promises.

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

If you request properly God shall give you “the peace of God.” That is God’s promise for now.

For the future, this book will show you from the Bible the glorious things that God has in store for you, for me, your loved ones, for all humankind, and even all intelligent beings in the universe.

The “Mystery of God” as revealed to Paul, John, and others, is fully explained. Your understanding of the Mystery will open the Scriptures so you will not only love God more, but you will understand God’s love for you as never before.

Completed months before Dr. Martin’s death in January 2002, this study puts an appropriate capstone on more than 40 years of his writing, speaking, and educating people about the Holy Scriptures and its wonders. It was a joy to work with him at various times over his last 15 years as he produced scholarship that carved its own niche between writing for experts and the layperson.

What Paul admonished Timothy to do, Ernest Martin truly fulfilled during most of his adult life. He,

Stud[ied] to show [himself] approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Preface

by Ernest L. Martin

This book is designed to take the place of my former publication called The Biblical Manual and The Home Bible Course (now out of print). These prior works were intended for an interested group of denominational Christians who centered most of their beliefs on retaining the various Old Testament customs in their New Testament theology. The Essentials of New Testament Doctrine is a new book entirely. It gives the basic information of what Christianity is all about in the first place. It is a primer that puts into a person’s hand (as the title suggests) all the essential teachings of what real Christianity embraces.

It is with much pleasure and thankfulness to God and Christ Jesus that they have allowed me the opportunity to record these principal truths of the Holy Scriptures. I hope and pray that all who read this book will rejoice in the revealed teachings of the Holy Scriptures. The pristine message of God as shown in the Scriptures is glorious beyond compare.

This book is designed to be read from beginning to end, in a progressive manner. Although a Topical Index is provided, it is best used for reference after the progressive reading of the book. 1 I feel this method presents the Gospel of Christ in the best possible light. This book (when you finish reading it) will show you who you are. And once you know who you are, you can then direct your life in accord with that knowledge of your royal heritage and your awesome potential.

My sincere appreciation goes to David Sielaff for his light editing and composition of this book.

Editor’s Note

This Internet edition is essentially the same as the latest printed edition (the brown and red cover, 2001/2004 edition).

Some typographical and content errors have been corrected and I have altered some formatting to adjust to the screen and print situations printing from the computer. This usually means shortening longer paragraphs for readability Word changes have been minimal. Where necessary I added or clarified footnotes at my discretion as editor.
