I am no prophet, nor do I have the slightest prophetic powers to tell anyone what will happen in the near or remote future. I do not have visions or dreams or voices out of the air to tell me the future. I hope most of us do not require those things. What I have is a body of books called the Holy Scriptures. In those Scriptures are prophecies which can be understood. If a person approaches the prophecies from the historical point of view, reading them for what they actually say (and with proper translations), we can begin to understand major events prophesied to occur a few years in advance of us.
I can read the prophecies and so can you. What I want to do is to point out some of these prophetical scriptures so we can be aware of them at this crucial time in world history. I believe from my historical knowledge that I have had, and biblical training also for over the past 35 years, that some of these things can be put into a proper order from that knowledge and understanding. Perhaps we can begin to see what will actually start to occur in the not too distant future just on the horizon to us. In my view that very time of the end is very near. It is not a matter of setting dates. I do not want to do that, of course not, but Christ did tell us in His Olivet Prophecy to watch events.
The events occurring at present [in December 1990] in the Middle East are very important indeed. They have the earmarks of the beginning of the countdown to Christ’s Second Advent. I think most of us realize that the Bible concentrates prophetic information almost wholly in the Middle East: Judah, Israel, also the surround countries, and Jerusalem in particular. We need to pay close attention to those regions.
What will occur, however, is a revolution in knowledge of the Bible, about its teachings, and its prophecies about the future just on the horizon. Look to the Bible as we approach this time period of the end, because the prophecies will be made clearer. The knowledge of the prophecies will be made plain to those who are the wise, the ones God has picked to understand, through His Spirit, the prophetical word.
In Daniel chapter 12, there are verses that we need to be aware of. After giving 11 chapters of prophetical information, most of it dealing with the end time, the angel Michael said to Daniel:
“Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”
To “run to and fro” does not refer to transportation, but to run to and fro in the Book of Truth of Daniel chapters 10 and 11. In Hebrew it says “the knowledge” of the mysterious teachings, the prophetical understandings of that book shall be increased. In verses 9 and 10 we read this:
“Go your way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.”
We have a promise from God that the knowledge of the truth pertaining to the prophecies of Daniel and other matters of the Old and the New Testaments will be made clear and understandable as the end gets close. We are approaching that very time now. The apostle Peter said the same thing about a restoration of knowledge and understanding at the end of the age prior to Christ’s Second Advent. In Acts chapter 3 are verses we need to pay close attention to and be aware of, because they are speak of our time:
“And now, brethren, I wot [know] that through ignorance you did it, as did also your rulers [they crucified the Messiah, Christ]. But those things, which God before had showed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he has so fulfilled. Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.”
Where the King James says “when the times of refreshing shall come,” that Greek actually says “so that the times of refreshing shall come.” If the Jews that Peter was speaking to and their descendants will repent, the times of refreshing shall begin to come. Peter said that some 1900+ years ago, but he goes on to speak of a time just before the Second Advent of Christ back to this earth.
“And he [God the Father] shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” 2
Verse 21 is important because it talks about a “restitution of all things,” a restoring of the understanding of the truth spoken by not just one prophet such as the prophet Daniel, but it says that by the mouth of “all the holy prophets since the world began,” that there will be a restitution or a restoring of all things.
Christ identified the man responsible for bringing on this restoration in Matthew chapter 17. Jesus had just come down from Mount Hermon, the mount of Transfiguration. There was a vision of Moses and Elijah up there, and a vision of Jesus being transfigured in front of them. They also heard God the Father Himself up there on that mountain. There were three apostles there at the time. Here is Jesus telling them to:
“And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, ‘Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.’ And his disciples asked him, saying, ‘Why then say the scribes that Elias [Elijah] must first come?’ And Jesus answered and said unto them, ‘Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.’”
What does it mean to “restore all things”? Jesus went on to say that John the Baptist had come in the spirit of Elijah, and the apostles understood that. By this time, however, John was dead and Jesus was talking about a future Elijah that would come. This future Elijah was described in Malachi 4:4–6. He would come just before the Day of the Lord (before Christ’s Second Advent), to prepare a people for the Lord, lest the Lord (Yahweh) would “smite the earth” at that time. Elijah just prior to the Second Coming of Christ will head an organization of peoples, no doubt, to teach the truth to the people of the world. He will be just like the Elijah of old, and will no doubt be a priest. 3 One part of the restoring that the Elijah will carry out shall have something to do with the Temple in Jerusalem. Only priests could go into the Temple of God.
Regarding John the Baptist:
“For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, … many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.”
John, as the first type of Elijah, was to turn the children of Israel to God. That is exactly what the future Elijah will do. He will turn many of the children of Israel to God. It does not say he will turn to Gentiles, it says he will turn the people of Israel to God. The people of the world will notice his work and pay attention. The Israelites, the Jews, and others who are part of the nation of Israel at the present time, will respond to someone coming and teaching them the truth in the near future, and they will turn to the Lord:
“And he [John the Baptist] shall go before him [God] in the spirit and power of Elias,
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children [referring to Malachi 4:6], and
[to turn the hearts of] the disobedient [stubborn] to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
This restoration, this turning of the minds of people from disobedience to wisdom and justice means that there will be people genuinely converted to understand the truth. They will be people of Israel just prior to Christ’s Second Coming. That is clearly the case because the original prophecy of Malachi stated:
“Remember you the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb [at Mount Sinai] for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send you [Israel] Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children [of Israel], and the heart of the children to their fathers [of Israel], lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.”
Here is a prophecy preceding the Day of the Lord of an individual who will come to the Israelites, to the Jews, to turn many of them to the Lord and restore the things of the early prophets. There will be a restoration of all things. This means that the Jews themselves will come to understand, appreciate, and worship Yeshua their Messiah. Yeshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus, and they will accept Him prior to the Second Coming of Christ. That does not mean every single one of them, but the vast majority will do so.
John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah, and thousands came out to be baptized by John. When the apostles began to preach about Christ after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we find that within thirty years tens of thousands of Jews actually believed that Jesus was the Messiah.
The same thing will happen in the generation prior to the Second Coming of Christ. There will come an Elijah, a new John the Baptist coming in the spirit of Elijah. 4 He will have the power and authority and commission of Elijah, and also of John the Baptist. What will happen is that tens of thousands of Jews, as in the days of John the Baptist, will convert to Christianity, to Yeshua. That means that Jesus Christ will be accepted by multitudes of Jews primarily in Israel, but also throughout the world.
We will see a restoration of Christianity amongst the Jews. It will be a purer type of Christianity than most of us are familiar with in this Gentile world. Most Jews will not put up with the idolatry that we have in our churches. Current Christianity has many pagan elements in it with Jesus portrayed as the pagan god Zeus with other pagan gods and goddesses masquerading as Jesus Christ, the apostles, Mary, and other saints of the Old and New Testaments. The apostles would be aghast if they could come back to life and see the type of Christianity being taught today. They would find Christianity today is nothing more than papered-over paganism. The Jews will not put up with anything of that nature.
This revolution of knowledge will take place a few years in advance of us — and I think it is coming quicker than we might imagine — to straighten out and to get rid of this nonsense perpetuated in Christianity for the last 1700 years since Constantine when paganism first came in. It has flourished ever since.
The Jews will wise up, and do you know who will help them to do it? We will! We are giving the truth not only to the world but to the Jews. We here at ASK are doing our part. God is helping us through His Spirit to understand these vital truths at this end time, and that we are giving the truth to the people. The truth will mushroom pretty soon so that all people in the world will understand the truth of the New Testament, stripped of all its paganism. It is time to get back to the truth. This Elijah to come, this new John the Baptist, will show to the Jews what the truth really is. We are precursors of all of that. We are not that John the Baptist. Most of us are Gentiles. The Jews will take it up just like in the old days, when the Jews first received Christianity. The apostles were Jews. Most of the early Christians were Jews.
The apostle Paul, though he was the apostle to the Gentiles, was a Jew from the tribe of Benjamin. What happened? The Jews gave the teaching of Christ to the Gentiles, our spiritual forefathers. We took up those teachings. We corrupted them later on, that is quite true, but at the same time we took them up and ran with them and we are doing that to this very day.
The Jews at the middle of the 1st century C.E. began to reject Christ. By 70 C.E. their city of Jerusalem and the Temple were completely destroyed. After 135 C.E. Jews were not allowed even to enter Jerusalem. Since that time we very seldom will find any Jews who are Christians. Since that time they have looked on the teachings of Christianity, especially since the time of Constantine, and found disguised paganism. They want no part of any such nonsense and I don’t blame them!
This Elijah to come will straighten out the truth. But before even he does it the truth of the Gospel will be made known around this world. Here, now, we ourselves are teaching it, and it will get more powerful and more powerful and more powerful. There will be a revolution in knowledge. The people of the world will be able to see some of these truths. And the Jews will take up these matters. The apostle Paul, in the 11th chapter of the Book of Romans says that the times of the Gentiles are with us now, but when the fullness of those times of the Gentiles occurs — and that is what we are, mainly Gentiles — Israel finally will be saved. We are the ones that have been given the grace of understanding Christianity in the best way now.
But there is coming a time when the Israelites will get back that understanding, because God will send them grace. He will send them an understanding of the truth. They will not get it on their own. The Gentiles will give it back to the Jews. You and I who inherited it from the Jews some 2000 years ago shall be responsible for handing it back to them. That is what we ought to be doing at this present time.
When we hand it back to them, then they will take up the commissions that God has given Israel to do in the first place, helping people understand what the real truth of Yeshua, Jesus Christ, is all about. They will do their part at that time because there is coming a restoration of all things when this man comes on the scene in the spirit of Elijah. It will happen, I think, in our generation and it will occur sooner than many of us think. The nation of Israel will come to an understanding of the truth, and not only Israel. Everyone in this world shall be given a dose of the truth to see the difference between error and truth. The Jews will get this message and God will open their eyes so that they themselves will take this message of Christ, which we will give to them, and they will then run with it in a proper way. This is shown in several places of the Old Testament, but most specifically you will find it in the last three chapters of the book of Zechariah in what is known as the minor or the little apocalypse. 5
These prophecies describe an end time scene dealing with Israel, with Judah, and particularly focusing in on Jerusalem and the people there just prior to the Second Coming of Christ. Chapter 14 shows what will happen once the great Millennium emerges on earth after Christ’s return.
It all starts in chapter 12 by giving an introduction of what will happen in the generation just prior to the emergence of the great and terrible day of the Lord. Remember that this Elijah, this new John the Baptist, will come along to restore all things (Malachi 4:4–6; Matthew 17:9–11). That means the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem. That means the restoration of many of the teachings of Moses, but it also means the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This Elijah will come almost exclusively, to the Israelites, to the Jews. He is not coming to Gentiles.
You and I can know the truth without the man coming in the spirit of Elijah being here. You and I have the opportunity (and in fact we even have the grace and the goodness that God gives to us now) to understand these truths before Elijah ever comes to the Jews. Many of the things that you and I understand at this present time he will take and teach to the Jews. They in turn will go and bring them out into full bloom, so that they and the world shall know the truth coming out of Jerusalem.
Before the great and terrible day of the Lord, this Elijah will come to restore all things. In the last three chapters of Zechariah you find events in Jerusalem and in Judea historically described, though in prophetical terms up to the time when the Messiah, in the name of Yahweh, will stand with His feet on the Mount of Olives. So chapters 12, 13, and 14 describe events just on the horizon to us. In fact, I can take you to the exact verse where the Elijah comes on the scene with his teachings, though he is not even mentioned in this verse. Yet when you compare scripture with scripture, you have no trouble identifying the very time that this Elijah will come on the scene in Jerusalem to teach the truth to the people so the Jews will accept the proper teachings of Christianity.
Once the Jews do that in Jerusalem, and people in the world through television and other means will see clearly that most Jews in Jerusalem will be converted to Christ — a great majority. It will be just like in the time of John the Baptist and the early days of the ekklesia again, tens of thousands will accept Christ Jesus. When the mantle of paganism is absolutely destroyed and the scales over the eyes of the Jews and from people throughout the world have been taken away, they will wake up and realize what the Old and the New Testaments are all about. They will come to know and understand the real Jesus of the Bible, just like the apostle Paul. 6 Who will finally give the truth to the Jews? We will have a part in it. The one authorized to finally complete that job is this Elijah.
What happens in Jerusalem amongst the Jews will have ramifications around this world. When the Jews accept Yeshua in the proper way, and call him the Messiah, the Christ, and begin to teach those truths, then the people of the world will turn their attention to the Jew and then say to them, “well, tell us the truth also.” That is exactly what will happen. Whatever little stone of truth is turned in Jerusalem will have a rippling effect wherever you are in the world, no matter what nook and cranny you might be in, whether you are in the United States or Canada, whether you are in Great Britain, South Africa, China, Japan or India, it makes no difference. In the near future what happens in Jerusalem will be known to everyone around the world. 7
It starts in chapter 12 of Zechariah and verse 10. In this section of Scripture pay attention to a modern translation of the original Hebrew because the King James Version in chapter 12 of Zechariah is very deficient in its translation: 8
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that, when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born. On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.”
Zechariah 12:10–11, Revised Standard Version
There will be a great repentance of the people in Jerusalem and Judea that will directly lead to great mourning. This is a part of the restoration. Though the future Elijah is not mentioned, scriptures in both the Old and the New Testaments show that he will be the one responsible for bringing it to pass.
If you want to know the ultimate authority for all of this, we are told right here who He is. It is none other than God Himself, “I [God] will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication …[for the one] whom they have pierced” (Zechariah 12:10). They will come to mourn over Him and accept Him — finally. 9 This is the restoration.
Who was it that was pierced? It was Jesus Christ. These very verses were referred to by the apostles as showing the role that Jesus Christ had when He was crucified. The person they will look at and accept is none other than our Lord, Yeshua to them in their language. A general conversion shall arise, a conversion not just of the common people, as we might call them, but a conversion involving all strata of Jewish society, including Jewish leaders around the world. That is what it says in verses 11 to 14. Virtually all of them will begin to mourn over the One whom they have pierced. They will come to a conversion to Christianity, true Christianity. By that time they will have a good dosage of it.
I will tell you what we are planning to do — and we are doing it right now at ASK. We will get out this Gospel, the Good News, to everyone in the world who will receive it, if we have the finances and the funds that God can give to us, if you and others can supply them, and if we can get out through the media to the world. We will take this to everybody in the world.
It is not because we have a commission to do this. No. It is because we are members of the very family of God. We do not need to have commissions. We are not like Elijah or even like John the Baptist who had commissions. Do you know who you are and who I am? Do you know why we do the work that we do? Or, why we should do it? It is simply because we are members of the divine family of God, and we have an elder brother called Jesus Christ. We are already God’s children, both male and female. If we are members of this divine family, we ought to be about our Father’s business! That is the key to the whole thing.
We do not need to have commissions, but we here at ASK (and I hope that includes every single one of you) do the job because we know the world needs it. What we do will be important for people in the future so the whole world will finally begin to get a big dosage of the truth. This will be finalized once Jerusalem is given the truth by this coming Elijah. It says in Zechariah 12:10 that God will send a spirit of compassion and supplications. In the King James it says “grace,” which is fine. A spirit of grace and a spirit of supplications will be given.
The whole process will be initiated by God Himself. Take the Jews on the one hand and the Gentiles on the other, it makes no difference, no one would ever be inspired to do these things without God’s prompting. How many of us of our own free will accepted Jesus Christ because we thought the message was wonderful, and what He did was wonderful? We feel that now, but you did not come to that knowledge on your own. God Himself turned the screws in your head and in my head to accept Jesus Christ because God intervened personally in your life and in my life.
Do you know what He will do to the Jews of Palestine, down in Jerusalem, in the land of Judah? He will send a spirit of grace (or compassion) and supplications “so that when they look upon him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for Him.” There will be a genuine conversion. This is important: it will be genuine. When people have the spirit of God in them, Jews or Gentiles (there is no difference), they will have a different attitude of life on how they treat their neighbor. They will have a different attitude on how they treat other people in the world. They will have a different attitude even on how they treat themselves. They will have a different attitude in how they treat and respect God, and respect Yeshua.
The situation now in the Middle East with the Muslims on the one hand, Jews on another, and the Christians on another, all are at dagger points with one another. You do not see any spirit of grace and supplications there now. But soon when God begins to send that spirit of compassion and supplications, you will find a change of attitude. It will be with the Jews, it will be with the Christians and the Muslims in Jerusalem, and the people in the land of Palestine (otherwise known as Judea and Jerusalem) will be given a big dosage of the truth — and most will accept it! That is what it says. Going on in chapter 13 of Zechariah:
“On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.”
Zechariah 13:1, RSV 10
A few events need to occur between this conversion and the Day of the Lord (described later in Zechariah chapter 14). These are up-to-date scriptures that we are looking at here. It goes on in verse 2:
“And on that day says the Lord of hosts, I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, so that they shall be remembered no more; and also I will remove from the land the prophets [the false prophets] and the unclean spirit.”
Zechariah 13:2, RSV
Is that not amazing? Amongst all the population of the land of Palestine, when God sends forth this “spirit of grace and supplication” which will cause the Jews to turn to the Messiah, to Yeshua, they begin to teach His truth to themselves and then to the world. Then God will go a step further and remove the false prophet from the land, and remove “the unclean spirit” from the land. Ernest Martin did not say that; it is in the Bible. It will take place whether you believe the Scripture not. It will take place before the Second Coming of Christ, at the time of the great restoration, at the time of the great revolution in knowledge, and understanding, and wisdom, and doctrine, and prophecy that will come in the next few years.
I do not know many people today telling you these things, or are telling the world, but they ought to be told, because these things are right here in the Scripture. That is where you and I come into all these things, because I have been trying to show people in the world what paganism there is in this world, even in the churches. All over you find it and I am trying to show it. I hope you are trying to show it. We are teachers giving education to the people of the world. It will blossom forth and flourish. What takes place in Jerusalem will be made known throughout this whole world by whatever means. “The Coming Revolution in Knowledge” will have a transforming effect. It will mean that we shall finally understand the paganism we have been in for the last 1700+ years. God will take that “the unclean spirit” from that land.
From Zechariah 13:3 we note that the truth will be given to such an extent in this world and in Palestine, that most of these ministers going around in their black garb and dog collars saying “look who I am, I represent Jesus Christ” who then come and teach some of the most nonsensical teachings that you can imagine, perpetuating paganism with their days, their ceremonies, special garb, and their icons, what will happen to those people in Palestine when the spirit of grace and supplications is sent through the land?
“On that day every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; he will not put on a hairy mantle in order to deceive, but he will say, ‘I am no prophet, I am a tiller of the soil; for the land has been my possession since my youth.’ And if one asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your back?’ he will say, ‘The wounds I received in the house of my friends.’”
Zechariah 13:4–6, RSV
The wounds being discussed here are stigmata: marks corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus. There is coming a man at the end of this period who will claim to be the Christ. He will be the antichrist. He no doubt will show some kind of stigmata in his hands and back. At the very end this man will have to own up to the truth. He will say, well, in fact the stigmata in my hands and the stripes on my back were not put there some 2,000 years ago, but they were done “in the house of my friends.” This false christ will also have to own up to the fact that he is a deceiver. 11
For this all to take place, with the knowledge of the truth coming out of Jerusalem to the world for years after the restoration of the Gospel begins, for the antichrist to come on the scene, you would think that the he would never have a chance to deceive the world. But the apostle Paul says that God will send “strong delusion” to the world so that people will believe the lie of the antichrist. 12 God will send delusion at the very end of this period of restoration so that the people will believe the lie. The antichrist will be taken care of. He finally will own up to the fact that these wounds were made in the house of his friends. These verses in Zechariah have their fulfillment at the time of the antichrist.
“‘Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘Strike the shepherd, that the sheep may be scattered.”
Zechariah 13:7, RSV
That verse is quoted in Matthew 26:31 and Mark 14:27 as applying to Christ when He was crucified. It says “the sheep shall be scattered.” The sheep at the end of the age, or at the end of the restoration will again be scattered. The shepherd is going to be struck. This is figurative language but it will result in something:
“I will turn my hand against the little ones. In the whole land, says the Lord, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive. And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say [about the one-third remnant], …”
Zechariah 13:7–9, RSV
That fire of affliction, the tribulation, is mentioned in the Book of Revelation. Believers in Palestine will come through triumphantly, at least these people will do so here. God will say at the end, “… ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God’” (Zechariah 13:9).
Immediately after in chapter 14 (and forget about the chapter divisions, they are put there by man):
“Behold, a day of the Lord is coming, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in the midst of you.”
Zechariah 14:1, RSV
The Day of the Lord finally emerges on the scene. These events begin from Zechariah 12:10, once the “spirit of grace and supplications” is sent throughout Judah and Jerusalem. The Elijah to come will come before the great and terrible Day of the Lord to preach restoration like John the Baptist did some 2000 years ago. Then we find the antichrist and a great tribulation takes place. People turn against one another again, and two-thirds of the people of Palestine perish, but the one-third come through triumphantly. God will say “They are my people,” and they will say “The Lord is my God.” Then what happens? The Day of the Lord occurs and there is a battle against Jerusalem when all the nations are gathered against it:
“The city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women ravished; half of the city shall go into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle.”
Zechariah 14:2–3, RSV
This is when the nations gather together at Armageddon and then finally come down to Jerusalem to do battle. When that happens it says:
“On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives which lies before Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west.”
Zechariah 14:4, RSV
At that moment the great Millennium of God finally comes on the earth, and peace and security will begin. It will last for 1,000 years. That is described in the last part of Zechariah chapter 14. The feet of Christ Jesus (Zechariah 14:4) who uses God the Father’s personal name of Yahweh when He comes to this earth, that is the Second Coming when the resurrection from the dead takes place. That is when the real Elijah and the real John the Baptist, and all of us if we are dead at the time, will be resurrected from the dead to immortality. Or, if we are living we will be changed from mortal into immortal at that time.
These verses in Zechariah chapter 12 and 13 describe the situation that will take place in the last generation prior to the Second Coming of Christ to this earth, just prior to the Day of the Lord on this earth. What you read here in clear and plain language is that there will be a restoration of knowledge, of understanding, a time when the “spirit of grace and supplication” will come out for a period of time. At the very end, chaos will develop once again when God starts to bring in the Day of the Lord. Until that time, there will be a considerable amount of truth and understanding, and also harmony and goodness being given in this world. Believe it or not.
It does not mean that there will be absolute peace throughout the world, that is true. Nation will war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom (Matthew chapter 24 and Luke chapter 21), but this great restoration which will come out of Jerusalem in its fullness will spread around the world. You and I are having a part in establishing that restoration already. We are the Gentile part of the restoration.
Soon the restoration will be handed over to the Jews, similar to the New Testament period where the Jews handed it to us Gentiles, and we have been carrying the torch. Supposedly we should have been doing it righteously and properly, I mean our ancestors throughout the period of time. Now at the end of the age He has graced you, me, and others throughout the world. There are not many of us (we are the salt of the earth). It is not because of our righteousness or goodness, not because of anything inherently proper with us; it is because of the grace and will of God that He called you and me to understand His truth. He has given us the willpower, the enthusiasm, and the tools to get out the Gospel, the Good News, to the world.
What we few Gentiles will do prepare the restoration for the world, and then give it back to the Jews. That is correct. Once it is given, Elijah will come out from among them. He will take that restoration knowledge and understanding and with the spirit of grace and supplications from God, he will successfully convince the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem to “look on him whom they have pierced.” Finally the Jews will be back in the position they should have been in during the 1st century, carrying the Gospel to the world. 13
When it is time the truths of God will break like an avalanche upon this world. We will be able to have the fullness of the Gospel given into the hands of the Jewish people when that spirit of truth, that spirit of grace and supplications is given to them. Then everyone in the world will know just where the truth lies. The Gentiles will give the baton back to the Jews.
Maybe the time is changing, very soon perhaps. We will find that all of us working together can get this done so that the restoration can actually take place and it can go back to the Jews who had it in the first place. They were the ones, both Old and New Testaments, who should be giving it to the world as far as a commission is concerned. We find this in Romans chapter 3, the apostle Paul said to the Romans, who were Gentiles:
“What advantage then has the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?”
Romans 3:1–3, RSV
The King James says “committed,” which means that they were “authorized,” or “entrusted” with the oracles of God, both Old and New Testaments. Some could say the Jews are not qualified because they are not faithful. Some were not, that is true, but Paul says that does not make any difference at all. In fact he goes on to say: “By no means! Let God be true though every man be false” (Romans 3:4, RSV), or as the King James says, “a liar”; it makes no difference. As far as a commission is concerned the Jews were given the Old Testament to preserve and teach to the nations. Ezra the priest some 400 years before Christ put together the 22 books of the Old Testament, and put it into the hands of the priests and the elders of Israel.
When the New Testament came along 27 books were written for the Christian ekklesia and it was put together by Paul, Peter, and finally completed by John, who was a Jew and who had priestly blood in him. The New Testament itself was finalized by priestly Jewish hands, just like the Old Testament.
The New Testament is not anti-Semitic; it is a book compiled by Jewish people, by Jewish priests, put together in a way that exalts the Jew. Scripture is given, as the apostle Paul says: “To the Jew first” (Romans 1:16, 2:9–10). Everywhere Paul went he says “to the Jew first” and then to the Gentile, and he repeats it constantly. Only when the Jews rejected him in various places, did he turn to the Gentiles. The original order of the New Testament books exalts the authority of Jews ahead of Gentiles.
Here we are Gentiles, most of us. We are at a time in history — right now — when Jews are about to take over again, according to prophecy, the majority of the work of preaching the Gospel of the Messiah to the world. When we hand the New Testament back to them, it will be in the proper order. They will love it. They will say, my goodness, this is what the truth has been all along? That is right. We shall hand the New Testament back to the Jews to show them, this is your Bible. They will see in Romans that they are given the commission to carry the Gospel. They will do it! They will find out the New Testament is not anti-Semitic, it is absolutely pro-Jewish. But they themselves have to be converted and come to Yeshua, their Messiah. The Elijah to come will be like John the Baptist, the catalyst for this restoration to take place.
That restoration, as I said, is found in Zechariah chapters 12–14. But I began my explanation at Zechariah 12:10 at the commencement of the restoration. But in this minor apocalypse, these events of the time of the end, there was something I left out. I left out the first 9 verses of this prophecy. Those first 9 verses are most important because they describe events to take place in Jerusalem and in Judea before the Elijah to come emerges on the scene.
Those 9 verses that introduce Zechariah chapter 12 and this long end-time prophecy to the end of Zechariah, seem to show events that are being set up in the Middle East at this very time. I am making this lecture on December 4, 1990. I want to date it because in the Middle East at the present time we have a number of forces from the various nations of the world, notably the United States, Great Britain, Egypt, Syria, and others on the Saudi Arabian border with Kuwait. They are increasing their numbers to put down Saddam Hussein and the army of Iraq that invaded Kuwait.
An international armed force is at present [in 1990] in Saudi Arabia with authority from the United Nations itself to free Kuwait from the Iraqi invasion. The Security Council voted to give power to the various nations to conduct war against Saddam Hussein, and restore Kuwait to its legitimate rulers. If they do that, fine, they have the authority to do so. It means that virtually all the nations of the world are against Saddam Hussein. They are all putting Iraq under an embargo, a type of siege, so they cannot, supposedly, trade with other nations, and they are putting pressure on them to either leave Kuwait or the whole world will come against Saddam Hussein and Iraq.
That is the situation right now. The whole world is prepared to pounce upon Saddam Hussein unless negotiations occur and he withdraws from Kuwait. There may be some things that Saddam Hussein may get from all of this. The one thing he is asking for, and the one thing that is in the news all the time right now, is something that I said a couple of days after he invaded. I have written on this. It is not that I am a prophet or anything of that nature, but I am just calling your attention to it. Anyone with any common sense would have said the same thing who knows anything about the affairs of the Middle East.
As soon as Saddam Hussein went into Kuwait, he found he made a mistake, he wanted to start negotiations. Saddam Hussein would negotiate IF the Palestinian question or the question of Jerusalem and Israel also comes into the negotiations. He is linking up a settlement in Kuwait with a negotiation some way or somehow over the state of Israel, the Palestinians and the position of Jerusalem.
I said just a few days after the invasion that when the negotiations actually take place, the Palestinian question will come into it, that is the question of Israel. With all those troops there at the present time, in a sense surrounding Iraq, what if the Iraq situation is resolved? What are those troops of the nations of the world, including our own United States and British troops, what are they going to do? If the United Nations go against Saddam Hussein, if Saddam gives in, says he is sorry, and begins to withdraw, and negotiations take place on that basis, he could then say, along with other Muslim countries, that now is the time to put the same pressure upon Israel to settle with the Palestinians, and for Israel to get out of the occupied territories of the West Bank and in Jerusalem.
That is the way people are looking at it. That is not the way Ernest Martin looks at it, but that is the way Saddam Hussein looks at it. That is the way the Syrians, the Egyptians, the Saudi Arabians, and even the Kuwaitis themselves look at it. That is the way the nations of Western Europe look at it, and that is the way many people in the United States are looking at it. That is even the way some Jewish people in the United States and Great Britain look at it, believe it or not. Even some Jewish people are beginning to look at their brothers in Israel and are telling them that they should negotiate with the Palestinians. They even want to talk about what will happen in Jerusalem.
The things occurring in the Middle East at the present time very well may be a prelude to what we find here in these first 9 verses of Zechariah which I have not yet read. Read them now within the context of what is happening in the Middle East at the present time. 14 Those 9 verses in Zechariah chapter 12 show a prelude of historical events of when the great restoration of the truth will come to the people of Jerusalem and Judea. Again, read Zechariah chapter 12 in a modern translation like the Revised Standard Version.
“The word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus says the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him: ‘Lo, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of reeling [trembling] to all the peoples round about; it will be against Judah also in the siege against Jerusalem.’”
Zechariah 12:1–2, RSV
Verse 2 is a verse that many commentators over generations have not known what to do with because “a cup of reeling,” is a cup that has intoxicants in it of some kind. In Jeremiah 25:15 it is a cup mixed with wine given to the various peoples and nations. It is a cup representing the wrath of God. Jeremiah was told to take this cup and to make the people of the world drink it. They will not want to drink it, but they will be forced to drink it anyway. Jeremiah 25:15 says that this cup that Jeremiah was to give people to drink, this cup of wrath, will cause them to reel and to tremble. It was given to Judah first, and then to other nations round about, and finally it was given to the entirety of this world. 15
Here in Zechariah there is a different cup of trembling and it will also be given to the nations round about Jerusalem, but also “it will be against Judah also in the siege against Jerusalem” because Judah will drink it as well. How can Judah drink of it when Judah is in Jerusalem at the present time? In this prophecy you find this is the case. Well, there were Jews living outside of Jerusalem, but in the cities of Judea. At the same time there will be people of Judah living in Jerusalem. How can they drink of this “cup of reeling” against Jerusalem “in the siege” while the siege of Jerusalem is going on?
Read farther to see who else will be involved. This “cup of trembling” will be given to the nations round about Judea, but it will be given as well to some of Judah who also will drink of it. Remember that this section of scripture was written by Jeremiah, and he had this cup of reeling back in Jeremiah chapter 25. The cup is back for the end time.
“‘Lo, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of reeling [trembling] to all the peoples round about; it will be against Judah also in the siege against Jerusalem.’”
Zechariah 12:2, RSV
There will be some Jews who will be against Jerusalem when the time of this siege takes place. When will that time occur? Let us go on:
“On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it shall grievously hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will come together against it.”
Zechariah 12:3, RSV
At this time anyone who touches Jerusalem in any way will be grievously hurt because they will have to drink of this cup. Certain Jews as well will come against Jerusalem. That is what the text says. That is Jeremiah and Book of Zechariah here. 16 “And all the nations of the earth” will come against Jerusalem. When have all nations come against Jerusalem in the past? It has never occurred before. But here it is prophesied to occur in a time future to us, before the restoration. It says that even some of Judah (in fact it just says “Judah”) will be in the siege. “All the nations of the earth” will do it.
Right now, December 4, 1990, we have all nations of the earth surrounding Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Officially that is the case because almost all the nations of earth are represented in the United Nations. A Security Council meeting was held in which 15 members were there. Two small nations voted against it. The great nations of the earth: the United States, Great Britain, France (China abstained), and Russia voted to give power to forces in the Middle East to put Iraq under siege, under an embargo, and if necessary to go to war with Iraq to put Saddam Hussein down. Negotiations are taking place. At present all the nations, through United Nations are now against Iraq.
Saddam Hussein said he was willing to talk if the whole of the problem of the Middle East, particularly the problems of Israel, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Jerusalem would be discussed. Jerusalem is the center of power, politically and religiously. The Muslims feel Jerusalem is a religious and holy city to them. The Jews feel it is a holy city to them. Most Christians feel it is holy to them. Saddam Hussein says we will begin negotiating now, but he wants Jerusalem, Palestine, Lebanon all brought into the negotiations. If the situation in the Middle East with Saddam Hussein is brought to a favorable conclusion (and it looks like that it may be the case), then it is only reasonable, you would think, that the rest of the world would then turn their attention to this very problem that the Arabs, other Muslims, people of Western Europe, the United States, and other areas of the world, feel ought to be discussed. 17
Should the Jews have control over Jerusalem? Should Muslims control Jerusalem? Should Christians control Jerusalem? Who should control this important city called Jerusalem? All great powers of the world are interested in the status of this city. At the end of the age we have Zechariah saying that “all the nations of the earth will come together against it” (Zechariah 12:3). That includes the Diaspora, the many Jews outside of Israel. There are about 14–15 million Jews scattered around the world, far more than there are in Israel, which number about 4 million at the present time, it says that even Judah will see the unreasonableness of what is happening in Jerusalem, and that even they will be part of the world community able to put pressure on Jerusalem. What happens at this time when all nations of earth are besieging Jerusalem? That does not necessarily mean war. “Siege” means to put people under an embargo, to put the armies around them, to force them to do the will of the world.
A time is coming when all the world will be interested to make Jerusalem do certain things. The world will come against Jerusalem, threatening force. What will happen? God will act on behalf of Jerusalem:
“‘On that day,’ says the Lord, ‘I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. But upon the house of Judah I will open my eyes, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.’”
Zechariah 12:4, RSV
When it says “horses” there we do not have horses today, and the blindness is a figure of speech, yes, but it means that the armed weapons put against Jerusalem which will be used (if Jerusalem does not do as the United Nations say), these implements of war and the people behind them will be frustrated.
“But upon the house of Judah I will open my eyes, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God [through Yahweh Himself who will come to help at this crucial time in history].’
On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves; and they shall devour to the right and to the left all the peoples round about, while Jerusalem shall still be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem. And the Lord will give victory to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not be exalted over that of Judah [the rest of the cities of Judah].
On that day the Lord will put a shield about the inhabitants of Jerusalem [It makes no difference if all the world is coming against them.] so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the Lord, at their head [before them].
And on that day I [YHWH] will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”
Zechariah 12:4–9, RSV
That does not mean God will destroy the nations back home where they are, it means He will frustrate or destroy the effort of those nations putting Jerusalem under an embargo, under a siege to force Jerusalem and her people to go the way of the nations of the world. It shall be frustrated because God will rescue them.
That very moment is when we come to verse 10, where the restoration of Judah and Israel begins to take effect. The restoration and the arrival of the Elijah to come, like John the Baptist, is where great conversion begins to take place amongst the Jewish people, and they start accepting as their Messiah, Yeshua, Jesus. That is where the rest of these verses come into the picture.
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that, when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child.”
At that juncture the reason God will help them is because they will start having faith and trust in God. They will begin to be converted. God may use the power of the world coming against them to cause them to wake up, but they will change their attitude of mind. When the people of Jerusalem change their attitude, the attitude of the Arabs and Muslims in Jerusalem will be changed, and other people’s attitudes will change.
When these people begin to accept Yeshua as their Messiah and begin to practice His principles — and the people of the world begin to see what they are doing — the armies of the world will not be put against them any more. In fact, once these things begin to happen the Israelis, the Jews, will then look on their neighbor as being someone important, just like they are. They will treat their neighbor properly.
Do you know what will happen? The Palestinians will get their state and be prosperous. That is correct. They will get their state, not through strife or war, but when the Jews and the Israelis come to the conclusion that it is better to treat your neighbor as yourself. They will begin to treat people over there properly. The Arabs and the Muslims will start liking the Jews. The Jews will start liking them. The Christians in Europe will start liking the Jews also, and the Jews will start liking the Christians. What will happen is this, the revolution in knowledge that will take place shall occur throughout the entire earth and everyone will then be able to see that we have been led astray, every single one of us, from the truth of Yeshua, of Jesus. We have been led astray from the simple teachings of the Bible.
The Bible is coming back into its own and people will soon understand that it is the very word of God. I hope that we are about our Father’s business to get it back into its original dress.

2 Note the repetition of the phrase “by the mouth …” in verses 18 and 21 connecting the prophecies of Jesus’ First coming with His Second Coming. DWS
4 It will not be the original Elijah or John the Baptist. They are both dead and in their graves. They will stay there until the resurrection which takes place at Christ’s Second Coming. This man will be in the spirit of Elijah. ELM
5 “Little apocalyse” means it is like the Books of Revelation or Daniel. Matthew 21:9 indicates that the last 6 chapters of Zechariah were written by the prophet Jeremiah some 100 years before. Ezra the priest likely attached Jeremiah’s prophecies to those of Zechariah. Zechariah’s own prophecies go from chapter 1 to chapter 8; chapters 9 to 14 are by Jeremiah. ELM
Note what happened in the case of the apostle Paul during his
“Ananias … said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto you in the way as you came, has sent me, that you might receive your sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.’ And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.”
Note that Paul believed before the scales were removed, but the removal of the scales from his eyes represented his new understanding of God’s truth regarding Christ Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection from the dead. See 2 Corinthians 3:14 and 4:3–6, along with similar expressions in Isaiah 6:10, 44:18; Jeremiah 5:21; Ezekiel 2:2; Matthew 13:11–15; John 9:39–41, 12:40; Acts 28:26–27; and Romans 11:7–10, 11:25. The same will take place for many in the world. (1) First the scales are removed, (2) then the truth flourishes for a time. Still later God will allow a final deception to occur so He can judge the world. DWS
7 Someone said that in the future Jerusalem will be so important that if any inhabitant down there begins to sneeze, we are all going catch a cold, no matter what part of the world we are in. That illustrates the influence that the people in Israel and Judah and Jerusalem will have on this world in the next few years ahead of us. ELM
8 It is sad to see the KJV mistranslations, words that do not occur in the Hebrew, even phrases that do not occur; it is amazing. We need a new modern translation to show what the original Hebrew of Jeremiah, found in the book of Zechariah, actually says. The Revised Standard Version is excellent to show the truth, although some of its words need to be retranslated. ELM
9 The inhabitants of Jerusalem and Israel shall have compassion, supplication, deep mourning, and weeping to God because they shall “look upon him,” through Scripture, Him who they crucified, their Messiah. DWS
10 In the ancient Jewish literature called the Targums, commenting on this particular verse, they say that the time is coming in the future when the atonement found in the Red Heifer sacrifice will be applied to the Jews in Palestine, in Judea. They then will be cleansed of their sins. Do you know where the Red Heifer was sacrificed and burned into ashes? Up on the Mount of Olives, not far from the very place where our Lord Christ Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected from the dead. The ceremony of the Red Heifer absolutely is analogous to what Jesus Christ did for us, and for the whole world, back some 1900+ years ago. The Targums say that the ashes of the Red Heifer would be applied to the Jews and they will be cleansed of sin at this particular time “before the great and terrible Day of the Lord” (Malachi 4:5). ELM
11 This antichrist will come on the scene and the people of the world, and Jews, will be deceived, but only at the very end of that period before the Second Coming of Christ. This period is discussed in the Book of Revelation and seems to be a 7 year period. To see how all of it will occur, go to the Book of Revelation with Daniel and put it together in a proper way. ELM
12 God has every right to blind people if He wishes. He has a right to send delusion if he wants. He has done it in the past, as recorded in the Old Testament. The Book of Isaiah is just filled with it. ELM
13 Hopefully at that time they will have in their midst the Manuscript Version of the Bible. We will have that before the restoration in Jerusalem ever takes place, because that is a well-known principle. It has not gotten done yet. It should have been years ago, yes, it should. We should have had those Old Testament books, along with the New Testament books put back in their proper order a long time ago, I am talking about 15, 20, 25 years ago [from 1990], it should have been done. We love the Holy Scripture, or at least we should. We want to see that the Manuscript Version of the Bible gets out to everyone in the world, to both Jew and Gentile. ELM
14 Everything from verse 10 down to chapter 14 discusses events just prior to the Day of the Lord, events that show the restoration of knowledge, wisdom, doctrine, history, and of the teaching of the truth. It shows that a Spirit of grace will be sent to the people of Palestine, of Judea, of Jerusalem. When that happens it will spread around the world. The truth will come out. ELM
16 The King James Version says “though the nations of the earth come against it.” That is not what it says in the Hebrew. ELM
17 Over 15 years of hindsight shows that Saddam foolishly did not negotiate. His troops were badly defeated in 1991, yet he remained in power (as God decides such things, 2 Chronicles 20:6; Psalm 47:2, 8; Daniel 4:17, 25, 32, 35; Jeremiah 27:5–8; Acts 17:26), and was later removed from power in the spring of 2003 by troops from the United States, United Kingdom, and a much smaller coalition of countries. Saddam was captured in December 2003 and is undergoing trial in 2006 for crimes against the Iraqi people. Dr. Martin’s insight comparing the world embargo against Iraq with a future embargo against Jerusalem still holds. The future embargo will fail because of God’s direct intervention on behalf of Jerusalem. DWS
